Back in Brazil, a friend of my partner Rodrigo wanted to start up a niche social networking/online greeting card site. His plan was to launch small in the U.S. and grow through buzz and exposure, rather than through advertising or media stunts. He named the site “Let Us Kiss” and the general idea was that it would be a place where people could buy “winks” or virtual flirts in the form of cards and animations, customize them and send to friends, lovers, family, and almost-strangers.
He asked us to help define his market, massage his business proposals, concept the information architecture of the site, design the logo and the look of the site, and direct the idea and execution of the winks.
With almost no money, but a lot of freedom, we designed something that looked, talked and walked differently than other dating sites, social networking sites, and greeting card sites. It had to be something between an ultra-swank art gallery and a velvet-roped club. Something that could generate talk value, just by looking at it. We convinced him to create several skins for the site so that people could customize their experience. And we worked with the exceptionally talented Linn and Nando at Nervo to create the cards and animations: mushrooms, ferris wheel, peacock and padded.
